Gear up for celebrations this May with a slew of art and film festivals for you and your friends to head down to. The line up for this year includes the highly anticipated, two-week long Singapore International Festival of Arts, and 22 stories, an interactive experience that transports you and your kids into fairytales abound. Here’s a quick run-down of what to expect this May:


1. Singapore Intl Festival of Arts (SIFA) - 16 May-2 June

The Singapore International Festival of Arts is back again for their 42nd run. With the Old Parliament Art House as their main base, expect a European-centric ambience meshed with local and international acts happening over a span of 18 days. We’ll be featuring some highlights below, but see here for a full list of their programmes as well as individual prices for paid exhibits and performances.

2. European Film Festival (EUFF) – 10 May–19 May

MIRACLE, a riveting film about the clash of political ideologies, co-produced by directors from Lithuania, Bulgaria, and Poland

The 29th European Film Festival is returning to Singapore with new acclaimed indie flicks from all over Europe. Headlining the festival is Beside Me, an illuminating film which portrays heartwarming human interactions within limiting spaces, directed by Romanian director Tedy Necula. The entire event will feature a total of 27 films, one from each participating European country.

3. Tatinis Art Show - 24-26 May - Affordable art fair

4. 22 Stories - 1 May - 30 June 2019

The fairytale-themed events just keep on coming. We previously covered the new Wonderland exhibit in ArtScience Museum. Now, you get the chance to meet the rest of your favourite fairytale characters, including Aladdin, Cinderella, and Ariel from The Little Mermaid in a 22-room interactive showcase at PeopleUp @ Pandan.

Journey through the rooms to find theatrical surprises by live actors along the way, and experience a concoction of magical encounters, including a magic carpet ride in Land of Nights.

5. Bedtime Stories – 21 May to 26 May

If, for completely relatable reasons, you get tired mid-shopping and want to find some cosy, private corner to lie down and chill out anytime between 21 May to 26 May, we’ve got the perfect gig for you. Head down to Level 1, The Plaza at the National Library from 7.30pm and be ushered into a TOP SECRET venue where a mysterious storyteller will be awaiting you. Sit back, relax, and enjoy a bed-time story about Lilly, a young girl and her encounter with creatures of the night, narrated by actor Thomas Dudkiewicz.

6. No More Free Space - 17 May 2019

Singapore’s small size warrants a creative visioning of high floored buildings and a vastly urban landscape. In this exhibit by Venice Biennale, 12 local architectural projects which have maximized the limited land space in Singapore are highlighted and celebrated. Anyone with an appreciation of urban designs should visit this showcase to find out more about art in constrained spaces.

7. The Social Sorting Experiment - 24-26 May

If you’ve watched social sorting experiments on Youtube and wondered what it’s like to be part of one, The Social Sorting Experiment by The Smartphone Orchestra is one unique experience you shouldn’t miss.

What’s this social sorting experiment all about? You, as part of the collective audience, will be taking part in a live social ranking, where you get to rate the other participants attending the event, and see how you fare in the face of social media algorithms, in 4D. If you’re game enough, head on down to Esplanade Annexe Studio from 24-26 May 2019 to experience it for yourself.

8. In Conversation with Ryuichi Sakamoto – 23 May

Oscar and Golden Globes-winning composer and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto will be coming to Singapore to discuss his life’s work. In a span of 90 minutes, he’ll be taking you through a narration of the influences, inspirations, and reflections behind his compositions. This is a rare opportunity to meet someone who has won an Oscar, all FOR FREE. You can’t miss this.

9. Katong Square Lifestyle & Vintage Market May Edition – 10 May

Shop a collection of vintage knick knacks, vinyl records, home décor items, artworks, custom jewellery pieces at the 40 booths in Katong Square on 10 May. You can also look forward to live DJ performances from old-school DJs like DJ Aceman and Rico Smith.

Many creative workers, local craftsmen and art teachers are affected by COVID-19 where they lost their jobs, had their service agreements terminated, or had their income drastically decreased.

There is still a lot of stigma about the art-related profession and the general view of artistic endeavors as impractical, unrealistic, and unprofitable, making their work considered easy and the fees paid below the stand.
